Trying to get help was adding to my stress

Published Sunday, October 13, 2019

I was feeling like I needed some help. I was told I had to go to the Kaiser facility. First I had to wait a long time just to check in. Then I was told that they operate on first come, first served basis, so I had to wait around two hours to see someone. When I met with the “clinician,” I was told it was an intake assessment, not a counseling session. After that, I had to wait more than a week to get referral to the company that they contract with. When I heard from the company, I gave them my location and waited to receive names of clinicians in my area. I believe I had to call them back after another week because I thought they forgot me. I had specifically requested a clinician specializing in childhood trauma. I was assigned someone who was not a good fit for the care I need. I was so irritated with the process, I decided trying to get help was adding to my stress and just gave up. I remember thinking, if I truly had a life-threatening mental health issue, I would have been in a world of hurt.
