Mental health needs to be taken more seriously

Published Friday, May 17, 2019

I’ve been having anxiety attacks for weeks. Kaiser told me the next appointment would not be until six weeks from the time I called. I called them almost everyday to see if there had been any cancellations so I could be seen earlier. I finally had a full-blown panic attack and I told  the receptionist I’ didn’t think I could wait another day to see someone. She was able to squeeze me in for a 30 minute appointment with a psychiatrist. Mental illness is debilitating. When it happens to you, you feel like you need to see a doctor right away. Six weeks is a long time to wait when you’re having symptoms of depression, panic, mood disorders. It’ll be too late for some of us by then. Mental health needs to be taken more seriously.
