Just two days after more than 100 of our members and nurses represented by CNA declared a staffing crisis at Providence St. Joseph Health’s Humboldt County hospitals, management laid off more than two dozen workers, multiple news outlets report. This week, workers stated their concerns to the Eureka City Council.

A state audit into nursing home finances that was spearheaded by NUHW research has resulted in a new law that will require nursing home operators to better document transactions with other companies also controlled by the same operator, according to the Eureka Times-Standard.

Appearing at the NUHW Leadership Conference, Immigration Judge Ashley Tabaddor’s warned that Justice Department productivity quotas will compromise the due process afforded to the people who appear before immigration courts. Her address was covered by the Mercury News and Telemundo.

Former President Barack Obama endorsed universal healthcare in a major speech,  Common Dreams reports. Speaking at the University of Illinois in his first explicit rebuke of President Donald Trump and what was seen as his first major campaign speech for Democrats in 2018, Obama said that progressives “aren’t just running on good old ideas like a higher minimum wage, they’re running on good new ideas like Medicare for all, giving workers seats on corporate boards, reversing the most egregious corporate tax cuts to make sure college students graduate debt-free.”

The Trump administration moved on Thursday to remove court-imposed time limits on the detention of migrant children, The New York Times reports. The proposal would end 20 years of judicial oversight and allow families to be held indefinitely in secure facilities as their cases wend through the immigration courts.

The Trump administration on Saturday said it would propose making it harder for foreigners living in the United States to qualify for permanent US residency if they have received public benefits such as food aid, public housing or Medicaid, The Guardian reports.
