Salinas Californian: 2,800 Monterey County health & service workers petition to dump SEIU, join NUHW
Workers say forced union merger in 2007 left them with no voice and weak representation
SALINAS—More than 2,800 Monterey County employees have petitioned to join the National Union of Healthcare Workers. The group includes around 800 healthcare workers at Natividad Medical Center as well as 911 dispatchers, child support workers, sanitation workers, and other public service employees who are currently represented by SEIU Local 521.
“SEIU told us a merger would make us stronger, but they dismantled our local union and replaced our union reps with a call center in Pasadena,” said Malia Esteban, a court liaison with the Department of Child Support Services for more than 16 years. “They’re not giving us the support we need to stop the budget cuts and protect vital public services in our communities. We need a union that is accountable to workers here in Monterey County, not just to SEIU officials in Washington, D.C.”

IHSS Consortium workers join 92,000 Kaiser, hospital and nursing home workers in effort to leave SEIU and join the National Union of Healthcare Workers
SAN FRANCISCO—More than 500 homecare workers at San Francisco’s In-Home Supportive Services Consortium petitioned on Monday to join the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW). Caregivers say they’re getting rid of their old union, SEIU, so they can stay united with the 92,000 other California healthcare workers who are also seeking to join NUHW.

1,000 more workers at Alameda County Medical Center petition to join NUHW
Caregivers reject SEIU Local 1021 after union officials pushed them to ratify an incomplete contract and give up their right to choose their union
OAKLAND—More than 1,000 healthcare workers at Alameda County Medical Center (ACMC) have petitioned to join the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW), joining almost 500 more who petitioned in early March. Workers say officials at their old union, SEIU Local 1021, tried to take away their right to choose their union by railroading them into a bad union contract that left their health benefits at risk.
