NUHW homecare providers and advocates call on state to restore In-Home Supportive Services after Obama Administration says cuts would violate federal Recovery Act requirements
Failure to reverse cuts could cost California billions in enhanced Medicaid funding
Fresno, Calif.—Homecare providers in the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) joined disability advocates in calling for the state to roll back dangerous cuts to homecare services in light of a federal government opinion that the cuts would violate requirements of the recently passed federal Recovery Act.
“We need the governor and the legislature to restore this funding immediately,” said Flo Furlow, a Fresno homecare provider and elected leader of NUHW. “Not just to protect providers, seniors, and people with disabilities, but to protect billions of dollars in badly-needed federal funding for other healthcare services. We’re standing together in our union to make that happen.”

Socialist Worker: A fighting health care union
MORE THAN 700 health care union activists gathered in San Francisco April 25 for the founding convention of the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) to formally launch their new union and consolidate ongoing organizing efforts.
A provisional constitution and a leadership team were voted into place by union members, and workers from different localities met to discuss the issues and challenges facing their drive to build a democratic union.

Talking Union: New prescription for a healthy union movement
It’s not every day that a new national union is formed in the United States. But that’s exactly what happened on April 25 in San Francisco. If the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) turns out as planned, it’s a date for the history books.
“You will be able to tell your grandchildren in years to come,” NUHW leader Sal Rosselli boldly predicted to 700 cheering delegates, “that you attended the founding convention of a five-million member healthcare workers’ union.”
