Why I am resigning as an SEIU steward and supporting NUHW-CNA

NewsJanuary 10, 2013

I have been a steward for many years because I have always believed in protecting our rights in the workplace.

I am writing to you today to inform you that I have resigned my position as shop steward for SEIU-UHW.

Since the trusteeship I have watched SEIU-UHW transform into an organization controlled by leaders more concerned about money and personal power than the lives of Kaiser workers.

I have made the decision to now support NUHW. I firmly believe that we will have better representation if we all join together in NUHW, that we can win back the pension benefits and retiree health coverage that SEIU gave away to Kaiser, and stop the unnecessary layoffs SEIU agreed to.

Now that NUHW is joining CNA and the AFL-CIO, we will be an even stronger union.

I urge you to join with me. Together in NUHW we will have the voice we need at Kaiser.

In unity,

Maggie Kelly-Lieras, CCM Program Assistant, Kaiser Redwood City
National Union of Healthcare Workers

PS. Every day, more and more Kaiser workers are learning that SEIU is Kaiser’s union, not ours. United in NUHW-CNA, we will put workers and patients first, stop SEIU’s cuts to our contract, and start to make our future strong again.  Won’t you share this important leaflet with your co-workers today?
