The Californian: SVMH workers strike over pay, benefits, layoffs

Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System workers took to picket lines today to protest the floundering negotiations between the hospital’s largest union and management.

The one-day strike marks the first in the hospital’s 58-year history.

The union and the hospital have been at loggerheads over pay and benefit issues for at least seven months and this spring SVMH announced plans to cut as many as 150 workers.

Talks got rough in December after the union and the hospital rejected each others plan for a new contract.
