Only one child psychiatrist for an island of nearly 120,000 people

Published Monday, November 7, 2022

Sad to see this is still happening. My child needed continuous behavioral health services about 10 years ago. There was only one child psychiatrist for an island of nearly 120,000 people and less than a dozen therapists. While they were all friendly and professional, the wait to get an appointment was at least 2-3 months for the doctor and at least 3-4 weeks for a therapist. Sadly, behavioral and mental health services must be provided REGULARLY and CONSISTENTLY to be effective. Over the 7-8 years my child was receiving services, Kaiser was so irregular on providing services that we sought help through other insurance (costing us an undue financial hardship) and state services. The changes in providers did nothing to help my child. And my child loved the doctor and therapist at Kaiser!
