NUHW to host U.S. Senate Candidate Forum
The three leading Democrats running to become the next U.S. senator to represent California will appear at a forum during NUHW’s Leadership Conference Sunday, October 8, at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles.
NUHW is hosting this forum in conjunction with Roll Call, the newspaper covering Capitol Hill, and Courage California, which will be promoting the NUHW Candidate Forum to more than one million Californians via email. The event also will be streamed online and simulcast in both English and Spanish.
The forum, which will be held at 10 a.m. on October 8, will be streamed live in English on Roll Call’s YouTube channel and Courage California’s Facebook page, and in Spanish on NUHW’s YouTube channel.
Participating in the forum are Reps. Barbara Lee, Katie Porter, and Adam Schiff.
They will take questions submitted by NUHW members as well as a panel of journalists that include Melanie Mason of Politico, Benjamin Oreskes of the Los Angeles Times, and Sandhya Raman of Roll Call. The moderator, who will also pose questions to the candidates, is Lisa Matthews of The Associated Press.
Several journalists have already RSVP’d to cover the forum.
“We need to know where the candidates stand on health care, including mental health parity, along with immigrant and workers’ rights,” NUHW President Sal Rosselli said. “We want to hear their vision for creating a better quality of life for California’s working people and their families.
NUHW previously held a gubernatorial debate at its 2017 Leadership Conference, after which stewards in attendance cast their ballots to endorse Governor Gavin Newsom. Following the senatorial form on October 8, all NUHW members will have the opportunity to cast a ballot for the union’s endorsement in the first election to replace a sitting U.S. senator from California in more than 30 years.
“Our union’s endorsement is in the hands of our members,” said Rosselli. “After we get a chance to hear from the candidates, we’ll take a transparent, democratic and informed vote, and the winner will have NUHW’s full support.”
