Linda Chavez-Thompson

Linda Chavez-Thompson is the daughter of sharecropper parents in Lubbock, Texas, who rose from secretary for the Laborers’ International Union (LIUNA) to holding several posts in American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). She was elected vice president in 1988 and served in that capacity until 1996. Her leadership and organizing prowess eventually led her to being elected Executive Vice President of the AFL-CIO in 1995, becoming the first person of color to hold one of the organization’s top three positions.
