Throughout her political career, California State Treasurer Fiona Ma has been a strong advocate for small businesses, working families, and communities of color.
Born in New York City, Ma grew up in San Francisco and earned degrees in accounting and taxation from UC Berkeley and Golden Gate University before embarking on her political career.
She was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 2002, where she served for four years and worked on issues including affordable housing, economic development, and public safety. Ma then served in the California Assembly for six years, during which time she chaired the Assembly Committee on Revenue and Taxation.
As a member of the California State Board of Equalization, a role to which she was elected in 2014, Ma worked to ensure that California’s tax laws were applied fairly and equitably.
Currently, as State Treasurer, she is responsible for managing the state’s investments and debt, and for overseeing programs that promote economic development and financial literacy. She is the first woman of color to hold that position.
