Assemblyman alleges mismanagement by board of directors in Downing payout

A Salinas state assemblyman has called for a special audit of Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System following last week’s disclosure that recently retired Chief Executive Officer Sam Downing received a whopping $3.9 million in special retirement pay.

The unusual call for the audit by Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Salinas, suggests that SVMH’s board of directors have acted unethically and not in the best interests of the medical center, its patients or employees.
