NUHW members preparing candidate endorsements
August will be an important month for our efforts to elect pro-worker candidates to key elective offices this November. We urge members to participate in endorsement meetings slated for the coming weeks, during which everyone gets a say in which candidates receive NUHW’s blessing.
The more allies we can help win elective office, the more leverage we’ll have with employers to win good contracts. And, as a democratic union, we depend on members to interview candidates and determine who deserves our endorsement.
We recently held an endorsement meeting in Southern California where nearly two dozen members voted to support four pro-worker congressional candidates. We endorsed Katie Porter, a consumer protection attorney against Congresswoman Mimi Walters in the 45th Congressional District, which covers portions of central and southern Orange County.
We also endorsed Harley Rouda against Congressman Dana Rohrabacher of Huntington Beach in the 48th Congressional District; Mike Levin, an environmental attorney, in the 49th Congressional District which covers portions Orange and San Diego counties; Katie Hill, a nonprofit director, running to unseat Steve Knight in the 25th District, which includes Ventura and Northern Los Angeles counties; and Gil Cisneros, a Navy veteran, running to replace outgoing Congressman Ed Royce in the 38th Congressional District, which includes portions of Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties.
During a recent San Francisco endorsement meeting, we endorsed Board of Supervisor candidates Catherine Stefani in District 2, Gordon Mar in District 4, Matt Haney in District 10, and Tony Kelly and Shamann Watson in District 10. We also endorsed Faauuga Moliga, Allison Collins and Monica Chinchilla for School Board.

Southern California
Aug. 4, 10 a.m. San Diego Endorsement Meeting, 10393 San Diego Mission Road, #100, San Diego.
We will be interviewing candidates for Assembly, City Council races in San Diego, Chula Vista and National City as well as other races.
Aug. 12, 10 a.m. Orange County Endorsement Meeting, Buena Park Office, 8530 Stanton Ave. Buena Park
We will be interviewing candidates for City Council and Mayoral races in Anaheim, Brea, Fountain Valley, Los Alamitos and Westminster as well as other races.
Aug. 25, 10 a.m. Los Angeles Endorsement Meeting, 225 W Broadway #155, Glendale
We will be interviewing candidates for Assembly and State Senate, as well as local races in Calabasas, West Covina, Downey and other cities.
Northern California
Aug. 4, 10 a.m. East Bay Endorsement Meeting, NUHW Office, 5801 Christie Ave., Emeryville
We will be interviewing candidates for Oakland City Council and Mayor, Berkeley City Council, Richmond City Council and other races.
Aug. 12, 10 a.m. Salinas Endorsement Meeting, Location to be determined
We will be interviewing candidates for State Assembly, Hollister City Council, Salinas City Council and Salinas Valley Memorial Health Care System Board of Directors.
Aug. 18 10 a.m. Humboldt Endorsement Meeting, Labor Temple 840 E St., Eureka
We will be interviewing candidates for city council in Eureka and Fortuna.
