Patient Advocacy Organizer – Emeryville or Glendale
The National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) is searching for a talented, hard-working individual committed to building a powerful and democratic union. The successful candidate for this position will be an effective organizer and creative thinker who is resourceful and hard-working. They will work as part of a team of researchers, organizers and other staff on ongoing campaigns. The work of a Patient Advocacy Organizer is a mixture of organizing, advocacy, and coordination with other staff and external partner organizations to improve care for patients and win justice for healthcare workers.

- Commitment to fighting for workers’ and patients’ rights, as well as activist experience;
- Strong interpersonal, organizing, and presentation skills;
- Excellent oral and written communications skills;
- Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office and Google Docs) and basic statistical/quantitative skills;
- BA degree or relevant advocacy and organizing experience;
- Willingness to work long and sometimes irregular hours;
- Ability to manage a workload with competing priorities and deadlines and thrive in fast-changing circumstances where it will be necessary to work independently and take initiative;
- Respect for and nonjudgmental treatment of all regardless of age, race, class, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religion, ethnicity or ability.
- Investigate and document care problems;
- Advise patients and family members about how to address care problems via governmental and non-governmental complaint processes, and connect them with legal support as appropriate;
- Work with patients and family members to develop organizing approaches to address care problems;
- Develop, expand, and manage NUHW’s relationships with patient and health care advocacy organizations, including the design and execution of collaborative projects;
- Conduct outreach and communication to patients, families, advocacy organizations, and others.
Compensation: Salary $56,000-$100,000, employer paid medical and dental benefits for employee and family; auto allowance; life insurance for employee; holidays, sick leave, vacation; HRA and FSA plans; 401(k) with 14% employer contribution.
