Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Workers celebrate becoming the newest members of NUHW

Last Thursday, 860 workers at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital (SVMH) celebrated as the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) fully recognized their membership in the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW).

Since the workers chose to join NUHW by a two-to-one margin this May, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has filed numerous frivolous objections with the PERB. The last of these objections has now been dismissed and NUHW has been certified as the workers’ exclusive collective bargaining agent.

“We were always confident that SEIU’s tactics would fail, and we’re thrilled we can now move forward with the member-led union we chose, NUHW,” said Esther Fierro-Nuñez, a 20-year cashier at Memorial Hospital. “We’re not trapped in SEIU anymore.”
